James Arthur read Music at Durham University, where he was also a Cathedral Choral Scholar. From there he continued his vocal training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, completing the Post-Graduate Vocal Studies and Opera courses under the tutelage of Peter Wilson.
His operatic roles include Pritschitsch (The Merry Widow) for Scottish Opera on Tour, Noye (Noye’s Fludde) for North Yorkshire Music Services, Giant (The Selfish Giant) for Opera North Education, Simone (Gianni Schicchi) and Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) for Opera Bohemia and Zoroastro (Orlando) at the Ryedale Festival. James has appeared as a Monk in Curlew River at the Edinburgh Festival, as well as for Mahogany Opera in St Petersburg, Aldeburgh and the City of London Festival. He has sung Chorus for English National Opera, as well as at the Aldeburgh and Bregenz Festivals.
James performs, tours and records with a variety of ensembles including Stile Antico, La Nuova Musica, Taverner Consort, Cardinall’s Musick, The Clerks, Brabant Ensemble, Hanover Band, Gabrieli Consort and Philharmonia Voices. In 2007-8 he toured extensively around the world with Sting and his Songs from the Labyrinth and in 2009 he sang on Sting’s If on a Winter’s Night album.
He has held the post of Assistant Vicar Choral at St Paul’s Cathedral, where he still regularly sings. Other churches he can be heard at include St Margaret’s, Westminster, the Chapel of Lincoln’s Inn and the Royal Hospital Chelsea. James is in regular demand as an Oratorio soloist across a range of choirs. He currently studies with Neal Davies.
He also books singers and musicians for liturgical services such as weddings, funerals and feast days as well as for private functions. He recently provided an Operatic Vocal Quartet, Pianist and String Quartet for a private party at a luxury hotel in Venice.
